From Professional Musician to Professional Physicist: A Heartfelt Story for Every TeacherLas Vegas Optic – ‘Physics in a box’ helps fuel RHS’ STEM success
Dear Teacher, am writing to share a short-but-powerful story and I thank you in advance for taking a few minutes out of your busy day to consider it. My hope is that it will create a bond for working together toward the goal of unlocking your students’ full potential. I may be the most unlikely physicist you could know! Although today I am a professor, a published scholar and head of a prestigious research center, for most of my school life, I strongly disliked anything connected with math and science! As I reached the 8th grade, most of my grades in algebra, geometry and physics were Cs (with frequent Ds and only the occasional B). By then, I had been playing the accordion for more than seven years, attended music classes almost daily, and had no doubt that I would become a professional musician.

Las Vegas Optic – ‘Physics in a box’ helps fuel RHS’ STEM success
An innovative approach to teaching STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – is credited with helping Robertson High School students excel during the recent New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge.
Known as Physics in a Box, the program is based on how the sciences are taught in Asia and Europe, according to its creator, Dr. Anatoliy Glushchenko.
Currently a physics professor at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, Glushchenko said he has taught the subject to young students around the world, including South Korea,France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Glushchenko said he came to the United States 20 years ago, and saw then that there was a stark difference between the American school system and systems in Europe and Asia.
“The one main difference is that each country in the world teaches physics three times a week, as a separate discipline,” Glushchenko said. “And, they do it in grades six, seven, eight, nine (and) 10.”

The Independent News – MESD Heading to Physics in a Box
“To be honest, I was a little disappointed I didn’t get a chance to grab a box and start playing,” Haynes said with a chuckle, referring to her first exposure to the program. “I think it is a game changer for science in New Mexico,” said Haynes, who teaches both seventh and eighth grade. “The thing that is beautiful about it is its hands-on and absorbing. I’m a big believer that students learn more about science playing with it than reading about it. This gives every single student the chance to get their hands on it on a daily basis.” The district has about 525 middle school students and they will share the boxes in pairs, Romero said. And if it works the way school officials believe, the district could be adding elementary or high school boxes in the future. Each box contains more than 100 lesson plans. […]

Santa Fe New Mexican – Legislative Roundup Feb 4th 2020
Rarely do lawmakers provide demonstrations to support a bill they’re sponsoring. But state Sen. Mary Kay Papen, D-Las Cruces, who has introduced a proposal to fund hands-on physics education for middle school students, brought in Anatoliy Glushchenko, a physics professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, to do just that.

Orlando Sentinel – ‘Physics Bus’ rolls into Seminole schools to teach kids with interactive science experiments
The bus program is a partnership between the district and Physical Science Research Associates.
The bus contains eight stations. Students are given a “physics passport” when they board and go through each station equipped with “Physics in a Box” tool sets.
“’Physics in a Box’ is what America needs to compete in a global market,” said Dr. Anatoliy Glushchenko, founder of Physical Science Research Associates.

Sanford Herald – Seminole County Public Schools reveals Physics Bus to promote STEM learning earlier in students The New Physics Bus made its inaugural visit to Hamilton Elementary in Sandford on Tuesday.
In a statement, Seminole County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Walt Griffin said the program will prepare elementary students for the district’s renewed physics curriculum in middle and high school.
“Compared to a number of other countries, schools in the U.S. don’t start teaching physics early enough or in a way that many students find interesting or are able to grasp,” Griffin said.
The Physics Bus, he said in an interview, will deliver knowledge in an exciting way, using the Physics in a Box experiments. […]
